About Karen Kaminski, M.B.A., '09, J.D.
Karen Kaminski is currently the Vice President of Human Resources for Horseshoe Casino in downtown Cleveland and ThistleDown Racino in North Randall. She joined the Caesars organization in September 2011 and quickly hired a Human Resources team to staff and train more than 1,600 new team members at Ohio’s first casino. Shortly after opening the Horseshoe Cleveland in May 2012, she led the hiring and training of almost 900 more new employees at ThistleDown Racino in North Randall. In her role, she has built strong working relationships with government officials, regulatory agencies (Ohio Casino Control Commission and Ohio Lottery Commission), labor leaders and community partners. Prior to Caesars, Karen worked at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, headquartered in Hudson, Ohio, where she helped lead and grow the Human Resources function over a 10-year period. During two tenures with the company, she championed training, ethics, workforce planning, store openings, policy and procedure development, and labor relations. She began her career in HR as a file clerk with the former May Department Stores in downtown Cleveland and went on to become Employee Relations Manager at Clark Refining & Marketing, Inc. in Brecksville, Ohio, before originally joining Jo-Ann Stores in 1997. While pursuing her law degree, she joined the Cleveland law practice of Duvin, Cahn & Hutton where she focused on representing management in labor and employment matters.
Kaminski, a native Clevelander, earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Cleveland State University, a juris doctorate degree from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, and an Executive MBA from Kent State University. Kaminski is licensed by the Supreme Court of Ohio to practice law and is accredited as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) by the HR Certification Institute. She is a member of national and local law and HR professional associations, including the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association, Society for Human Resource Management and HR Leadership Group of Northeast Ohio. Karen also serves on the Board of Directors at the Cleveland Animal Protective League (APL). As evidenced by her educational background, she appreciates the value of higher education.
In 2013, Karen worked with Kent State University in the capacity of Executive in Residence in its Executive MBA program as well as taught the Legal and Social Impact of Managerial Decision Making course to the EMBA class at Babcock & Wilcox. Earlier this year, she became an adjunct faculty member at Cuyahoga County Community College teaching Introduction to Business to undergraduates.
